A US town has passed a local law making cyber-harassment a crime following the death of a teenager who may have been harassed into suicide by comments made online.



Megan Meier was 13 when she began chatting online with someone calling themselves 'Josh'.



'Josh' was in fact the mother of a former friend of Meier's who was angry at the 13 year-old's treatment of her daughter.



The neighbour kept up the pretence for over a month before insulting Meier, posting messages about her on various sites and telling her that the world would be a better place without her. Meier hanged herself the next day.



Meier's home town of Dardenne Prairie has now created a law which makes cyber-harassment a misdemeanour with a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.



Meanwhile the internet community has turned on the woman who created the online persona. Bloggers have posted details of her and her husband online, a brick has been thrown through their window and their house has been hit by paintball pellets.

You know the people that are so easy to condone other peoples behaviour and abilities?... well, yes I am intolerant of their opinions and behaviour when they poke fun and making a laughing stock out of other peoples misfortunes. I think it is just another form of social bullying.

And thinking of Cliques....



All people deserve to enjoy life withoout harrassement even in its lowest form. Where is the fun in spending your social life constantly in fear that you will be ousted from your group for doing the wrong things,or saying the wrong thing? Be yourself, and if your mates don't like it, they aren't true friends.



It was brought to my attention also about online bullying, this is really coming to the foreground of modern stresses. Whilst I have only encountered it in it's mildest form on this site.. (ie spelling errors etc), it is rampant in chat rooms particularly where groups are concerned. A lot of the kids require councelling after peer pressure online. Recently it was an news item that a teenager actually hung himself because of this new form of harrassement.



That is really sad. I am good to go on reform of this issue and happy that no people that I know actually go that far in their intimidations.
